“Looks Straight Enough” Toe Checking Wizard – BETA
Driveway alignment helper for people with a straight edge, a tape measure, and maybe a healthy disrespect for $200 alignments.
Clamp toe plates / hub bars / a long straight edge to each front wheel, measure between them at the rear and front, and this wizard turns that into
toe-in / toe-out angles, target values, and simple English.
NO LASERS · NO RACK · JUST MATH
Step 0 – Choose Toe Style (Optional)
Pick the closest match for your vehicle / use case to pre-fill a reasonable total toe target.
UNIVERSAL · JEEPS · TRUCKS · CARS
Copies the preset toe angle into the target box so the wizard can tell you what front reading to aim for.
Step 1 – Basic Setup
Pick units and give the calculator a rough idea of tire diameter at your measurement height. Track width is optional and just for info.
UNITS · TIRE DIAMETER · TRACK WIDTH
Use whatever your tape measure uses.
Measure from ground to tape height × 2, or just use a reasonable guess.
For your notes / printout only. Doesn’t change toe math.
Step 2 – Tape Measurements
With the straight edges or toe plates on the wheels, measure the distance between them at the front and at the rear of the tire (same height off the ground).
FRONT · REAR · DIFFERENCE
Tape reading between plates at the front of the tire (ahead of axle centerline).
Tape reading between plates at the rear of the tire (behind axle centerline).
Positive = toe-in (front narrower than rear). Negative = toe-out.
Basic best practices:
- Roll the vehicle back and forth a few feet before each measurement to relax bushings.
- Measure at exactly the same height front and rear (usually mid sidewall).
- Re-measure a couple times until numbers repeat – then trust the average.
Step 3 – Live Toe & Target
Live toe readings based on your measurements, plus a simple target helper so you know what front tape reading to aim for.

Target Helper
Mild street setups: often +0.05–0.20° toe-in total.
Use presets above or real alignment data when possible.
Visual How-To – Straight Edge & Tape
Single-axle view showing two wheels, one toe plate per side, and where to put the tape. Front of the vehicle is at the top.
Diagram exaggerates toe so the behavior is obvious.
NEON · LIVE · EXAGGERATED
How to measure (front at the top):
- Clamp toe plates, hub bars, or straight edges flat to each wheel, outside the tires.
- Measure between them near the front of the tires (top of diagram).
- Measure between them near the rear of the tires (bottom of diagram).
- Enter those numbers above – the yellow lines and labels update to show toe-in / toe-out.
Enter front and rear tape distances to see toe-in/toe-out and line spacing here.
Teaching Mode – What Your Numbers Mean
Quick sanity checks so you don’t accidentally “align” the truck into a tire-shredder.
READING · SYMPTOMS · NOTES
Once you enter front and rear tape measurements, this section will explain what those numbers mean and what to watch for.
